Every February, the Indian IT industry braves icy winds and heads for the NASSCOM summit where industry captains rubbed shoulders with foreign delegations, international press, and some VVIPS. The NASSCOM 2008—India Leadership Forum saw three Global Leadership awards presented, with Mr. Ratan Tata picking up the Global Indian Award. Eight Indian companies were also given innovation awards. NASSCOM chairman Lakshmi Narayanan said the IT-BPO industry had performed well last year. He said Indian companies had diversified into markets. He also warned of the pressures of doing business globally. Nandan Nilekani, co-chairman of Infosys, stressed on the importance of an Information Infrastructure. He spoke of four elements: the need for a citizen ID, electronic land records, financial accounts for all citizens, and a information distribution channel.
Ginni Rometty, senior VP, Global Business Services, IBM said the industry needs to train global citizens who can work anywhere. Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and MD of Mahindra & Mahindra, highlighted the challenges faced by the IT industry, such as the effect of currency changes, escalating costs, and a declining talent pool. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who was a guest of honor at the special session said India needs a transformation from a software powerhouse to a knowledge system powerhouse. “Unless you transform yourself, your growth will be linear,” he said.
